Hydrangea serrata - Mountain Hydrangea
Hydrangea serrata belongs, like H. Macrophylla and H. Stylosa to the subsection of the macrophyllae but he is to be foun in a much wider region within Asia .

Hydrangea serrata ssp . angustata : this serrata are taken from a very small area in the east of Japan which includes the regions around Fuji - san ( Mount Fuji) and Amagi - san ( Mount Amagi ) . The hydrangeas are of modest size , usually not more than 1m , the twigs are quite thin , the leaves are narrow and oblong to lanceolate , they bloom with flat umbels which both fertile and sterile flowers inside edge flowers are white colored . Hydrangea serrata ssp . japonica is native to the mountainous regions in the southern half of Japan , the plants are quite robust in nature to 2m in height. The species in Honshu , are graceful and airy , usually less than 1.2 m , the leaves are elliptical, strongly serrated and thin , even the twigs are thin and have long intermodal . Given the acid soil in Honshu most flowers are dark colored. On the second largest island of Japan : Hokkaido , we finf the yezoensis species of a larger size , often to 2m , the leaves are broadly oval , strongly veined , inter needs a lot shorter. The flowers are terminal and often have a diameter of 10 - 20cm , the sterile flowers are often serrated edge and have a blue to purple color.
In Korea finally are found low-growing species, sometimes with a large spread caused by suckers ( rhizomes ) , the leaves are broad oval , sharply toothed and veined and have some velvet view. The branches are standing close and have short internodes needs , the flowers are terminal , irregularly shaped , usually in some blue tones sometimes with pink there.
Serrata species are very hardy
Most serrata 's come from mountainous regions where it can also be quite cold in the winter they grow from 500m to over 2000m altitude and have no problem with our climate .
Serrata ' s bloom earlier
Many serrata species bloom a little earlier than the macrophylla species, most species continue to average slightly less than the average macrophylla species.
